3 Reasons Why Mass Applying to Jobs is a Giant Waste of Time

andrea3920

Mass applying to jobs or "rage applying" can be tempting especially if you're unhappy at your current job or you're unemployed but it's a risky decision. Here's 3 reasons why you shouldn't be so quick to start sending out a bunch of job applications all at once.

1. Quantity vs. Quality

Mass applying prioritizes quantity over quality. Submitting a bunch of applications in a short period might make you feel productive but all that time spent applying won't be worth it when you get little to no responses back. Why won't you get interviews? Lack of personalization. Employers look for personalized resumes that line up to their job posting.

2. Rejection by ATS Filters

Most companies use an Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter through resumes. Mass-applying increases the chances of your resume being flagged by ATS for lack of relevance like missing keywords and will get you instantly rejected.

3. Time and Energy Drain

If you compare the time you spend mass applying to 100 jobs vs. tailoring your resume for 20 jobs, you'll probably end up at the same total amount of time spent. Your chances of hearing back from those 20 tailored applications is significantly higher. Receiving close to 100 rejection responses is also not going to be great for your self confidence.

So, no matter how tempting mass applying may be and how the job search may seem like a "numbers game", it's a thoughtful and targeted approach to job searching that will ultimately yield you better results.
